RAY LOWRY: LONDON CALLING

18TH JUNE - 4TH JULY 2010

Have a read of the Evening Standard's view of this exhibition... http://ow.ly/1YMYK

Fantastic audio commentary slideshow from the BBC on The Clash and Ray Lowry, narrated by The Clash's tour manager and good friend of Ray, Johnny Green http://ow.ly/1Z8v6

In support of the Ray Lowry Foundation, this show was a unique exhibition paying tribute to the life and works of iconic illustrator, Ray Lowry. Manchester-born, Lowry began his career drawing for Punch Magazine, International Times, OZ, NME and Private Eye creating a cult following for his celebrated illustrations and cartoons. Most famously, Lowry created the unforgettable art work for The Clash's seminal 1979 album, London Calling

A whole host of artists, performers, writers and general creatives were invited to donate a work to the exhibition in honour of the late, great Ray Lowry, using the London Calling sleeve as a starting point.

The results were on display alongside a large collection of Ray’s work eventually going under the hammer in aid of the Ray Lowry Foundation - for which we raised £18,000.

As an offshoot of my research on secret histories and censorship this will be an evening of music, comedy, drama, film, banter and readings to take a sideways glance at the agony, joy and weirdness of love on Valentine’s eve.

It will be an eclectic mix ... but to give you a taste, the lovely Mr Stephen Fry has given us permission to read from his memoirs, we will hear from the sexual adventurers of the counterculture ... there will be stories of love against the odds and in spite of discrimination and secret love stories which have been sent in by YOU!

To book here is the ticketweb page

Andaz Liverpool Street and Evie Salmon offer you a special event to celebrate St Valentine’s Day.  Before going out for dinner and celebrating their love, guests can enjoy a fun and entertaining evening of love stories … and more.

Evie will look at the pain, joy and embarrassment of love, secret histories surrounding first loves and Valentine’s Days of the past, and also censorship and forbidden love, with readings and discussion by a specially invited panel.

Stories will come from both the past and present, from local people and more well-known writers and artists.  During the event, guests will also be able to drop their own stories or love dilemmas into a glass to be picked up by Evie, reinterpreted and read out (anonymity assured).  Short theatre pieces will be performed and we will have the premiere of a short film on the traces love leaves behind.

To add more mystery, the event will be held in Andaz’s hidden, secret Masonic Temple.

To spark the romance, the event will be fuelled with champagne and canapés.

Guests can send their own love stories, whether they are funny, sad, secret, forbidden or something else, to us prior to the event.  Please email them to fiona.pouchard@andaz.com.

The event is priced at £10 per person, which includes a glass of champagne.
